Make sure you pack your wellies because Porthamel Mill is reached via a farm track and you'll need to jump out to open the gate. Once through that gate you'll see the main Mill House that adjoins Porthamel Mill. The cottage itself is reached up a garden path and is all on one level. The property is surrounded by a very large wildlife garden with paths mown through the grass and woodland to private sitting or picnic areas. Take your Pimm's and go exploring to find a comfortable spot with the best views.
Enjoy breakfast on the terrace
Take your croissants and juice and settle down on the sunny terrace to enjoy an alfresco breakfast. The delightful raised area is surrounded by numerous tubs and is a riot of colour for much of the year - an excellent spot for enjoying a good book or doing the crossword.
Discover Talgarth
The small market town of Talgarth is situated just 1 mile away from Porthamel Mill. The area is rich with history and there has been a settlement on this site for at least 5000 years - the 13th century Peel Tower and 14th century Parish church are well worth a visit. Take a stroll just outside of the town centre and you'll find ancient woodland along the banks of the River Ennig. There are a series of waterfalls within the wood, the largest being Pwll-y-wrach or 'Witches Pool'. Local legend suggests that witches were ducked in this pool in medieval times. The woodland has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its special habitat values and the existence of some quite rare plants including the Lesser butterfly-orchid. The area is also home to a thriving colony of rare bats and dormice.
On a more practical note, Talgarth has a small supermarket, local chemist and an exceptionally good local butcher - many visitors order meat to take home at the end of their stay. There are also several good pubs and restaurants in the area.
Talgarth 1 mile, Hay-on-Wye 5 miles.
