Holiday Cottages for book lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and festivals in and around Hay-on-Wye
Hay on Wye is known as being the ‘town of books’. It's a charming town on the border of Powys and Hereford, Wales and England. To the south of Hay on Wye, are the majestic Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. North and East, are the rolling hills and pretty farmland of Herefordshire. There's plenty to explore in this area.
The town is world-famous as home to the annual literary festival, (held each year in May), when the likes of Dame Judy Dench, Germaine Greer, historian Antony Beevor and former American president Bill Clinton have been found among the books. But whatever time of year you visit, you can be sure there'll be something going on. The town also hosts HowTheLightGetsIn - the world's largest philosophy and music festival - as well as Hay Festival Winter Weekend, Hay Does Vintage and a food festival. Plus there's a farmers' market every Thursday.
The bustling market town also boasts antique shops crammed full of curios and collectables, lovely boutiques and stylish home and gift shops, as well as outdoor clothing suppliers, art galleries and a fabulous old fashioned sweet shop.
Among the wonderful array of shops, there’s an equally exciting line-up of cafés, restaurants, pubs and bars. Choose a sophisticated supper in a charming but intimate bistro, or go for a tasty pub lunch in one of the town’s many hostelries, followed by a fabulous home-made sheep’s milk ice cream. Or what could be better on a warm summer’s day than a piping hot bag of chips, shared on the riverbank?
If you need some activity to work off all those delicious meals, look no further than the stunning countryside surrounding Hay. Here you can try a spot of salmon fishing on the river, or climb into a kayak to ride the rapids. On dry land, there's everything from energetic mountain walks, wildlife spotting and climbing to horse riding, mountain biking and even gliding. There's plenty to keep sightseers and history lovers happy too, with castles, monuments and ancient churches scattered all around this beautiful part of the Marches.
