Hay-on-Wye

Holiday Cottages for book lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and festivals in Hay-on-Wye

For a great many of our guests, one visit to Hay-on-Wye is simply not enough. They enthuse time and again about the year-round energy and ambiance of this charming border ‘town of books’. It’s easy to while away a whole day browsing the miles of shelves in the many second hand bookshops as you seek out a rare first edition, or come face to face with a TV annual you haven’t seen since childhood.

Of course, the town is world famous for its literary festival, (held each year in May), when the likes of Dame Judy Dench, Germaine Greer, historian Antony Beevor and former American president Bill Clinton have been found among the books. But whatever time of year you visit, you can be sure there'll be something going on.

The town also hosts How the Light gets In - the world's largest philosophy and music festival - as well as Hay Festival Winter Weekend, Hay Does Vintage and a food festival. Plus there's a farmers' market every Thursday.

The bustling market town also boasts antique shops crammed full of curios and collectables, lovely boutiques and stylish home and gift shops, as well as outdoor clothing suppliers, art galleries and a fabulous old fashioned sweet shop.

Among the wonderful array of shops, there’s an equally exciting line-up of cafés, restaurants, pubs and bars. Choose a sophisticated supper in a charming but intimate bistro, or go for a tasty pub lunch in one of the town’s many hostelries, followed by a fabulous home-made sheep’s milk ice cream. Or what could be better on a warm summer’s day than a piping hot bag of chips, shared on the riverbank?

If you need some activity to work off all those delicious meals, look no further than the stunning countryside surrounding Hay. Here you can try a spot of salmon fishing on the river, or climb into a kayak to ride the rapids. On dry land, there's everything from energetic mountain walks, wildlife spotting and climbing to horse riding, mountain biking and even gliding. There's plenty to keep sightseers and history lovers happy too, with castles, monuments and ancient churches scattered all around this beautiful part of the Marches.

We have over fifty beautiful holiday cottages in and around Hay on Wye. We have town houses, rural retreats, cottages for big groups, and romantic cottages for 2. Cottages a stone's throw from the book shops, boutiques and restaurants, holiday cottages for cycling, walking and fishing.

We have cottages in Hay-on-Wye itself, as well as cottages in neighbouring villages, hamlets and towns including Bredwardine, Clyro, Dorstone, Glasbury, Llanigon, Llyswen, Talgarth and Three Cocks.
