Quaint and charming, this 18th-century toll house is built into the side of a hill on the banks of a picturesque canal, set just 0.25 miles from Talybont-on-Usk.

Enjoy a romantic getaway to Mid Wales in this beautifully modernised 18th-century toll house. Built into the side of a hill on the banks of a picturesque canal, an array of exciting trails lie on the doorstep while the pretty village of Talybont-on-Usk is just 0.25 miles away. Carefully finished, the reverse-level accommodation boasts many rustic details, while outside two terraces offer breathtaking views and lead down to a private stretch of canal bank.

Inside, this Grade II-listed cottage has been tastefully refurbished to offer elegantly modern decor while retaining original oak beams, arched windows and stone walls. Upstairs, the stylish shaker-style kitchen provides plenty of space for rustling up delicious meals, while the open-plan lounge/diner boasts spectacular elevated views and a cosy wood burner. Steep cottage-style stairs lead down to the bedrooms, one of which opens directly onto the patio – perfect for al fresco breakfasts. Choose between the two terraces to enjoy a morning coffee and spectacular views.

Once the toll point for limestone and slate as it was transported down the mountains, this charming cottage is now a perfectly-placed holiday home. Follow the towpath of the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal towards the village to enjoy a bite to eat at one of the 2 local pubs, or set out along one of the many trails that cross the surrounding landscape. Talybont Reservoir (3 miles) is a lovely location for a walk, cycle ride or picnic, while Llangorse Lake (7.5 miles) is a must for water sports. Meanwhile, the popular town of Brecon (7.5 miles) is home to a good selection of independent shops, restaurants, cafes, and pubs.

Lovely cottage. Beautiful location and very cosy. Nice and warm. Stairs are steep so may be difficult for elder dog or person. Cannot really fault it.

The location of the cottage is well suited for outdoor activities. The house is "very quirky" :-) There was a lot of stuff packed in the wordrobe which we had to take out toe put our clothes in. Parking space for the car is a bit awkward. It is a pity that there is no parkingspace on or offroad for a guest. The cottage has enough equipment for selfRead more catering but unfortunately the kitchen was greasy on arrival. Hide

Lovely cottage in a good location. The first cottage I've stayed at where the sofa and the bed were actually comfy! The bedrooms are downstairs and the bathroom upstairs which is only a bit of a bind if you need the bathroom in the night. Everything else was great

The Counting House was in a very nice location with plenty of walks on your doorstep, either along the canal in either direction or up into the hills/mountains. The log burner is a nice bonus and we used it for 4 of the nights we were there, although maybe not so useful in the warmer months. Balcony looking over the canal was very pleasant althoughRead more we only managed to use it once as the weather wasn't conducive. No problem with the house being "upside down" and plenty of stuff in the kitchen. Hide

Lovely property directly next to the canal. Owing to the time of year and weather we were unable to sit outside on the terrace but it would be lovely to do this in (hopefully) the warmer summer months. Very quiet location which we would certainly love to come back to one of these days.
