Pen-yr-Heol is just perfect for a large family get together. This 17th century traditional Welsh long house with attached stone barn has been renovated and restored with much of the original character being retained. The house nestles at the foot of the Black Mountain on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and is situated 3 miles north of Ystradgynlais in the Upper Swansea Valley. The house sits in a large garden with half an acre of its own land where you can listen to the burbling stream and birdsong as a mountain stream runs past one side of the property and a small river flows at the back (fenced off for small children). This cottage is an ideal base for a family or activity groups wishing to spend time together with easy access to both the sea and the mountains; and it is a very good location for visiting the new Geo Park. Palleg Golf Club 1.5 miles, fishing 7 miles. Great for stargazing due to no light pollution.

Sleeps 20, 8 bedrooms. The farmhouse kitchen is very well equipped with ample work and storage space, one double and one single oven and hobs, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, two fridges and a freezer. A utility room contains a tumble dryer. There is a most attractive oak beamed dining room with long dining table and benches with an open fireplace. The sitting room has large oak beams and is spacious and comfortable with sofas and chairs and large inglenook fireplace with a multi-fuel stove, TV, DVD and a payphone. Customer Comments

    • We had a fantastic time staying at Pen-yr-Heol near Ystradgynlais. The booking process was smooth, the property owner was very friendly and helpful and the house was in excellent condition. The directions to the property and advance instructions were very helpful. Many thanks to the owner and the booking team.
    • Pen Yr Heol is in a delightful setting – Burbling stream and birdsong better than cars and traffic. Dark skies with no light pollution pity cloud cover prevented star gazing. Excellent choice for eating out, specifically Cwmphil Fish and Chips (5Mins), Ynyscedwyn Arms (10mins) and The George (15Mins). Supermarket within 5 minutes Excellent walking within easy reach along good quiet roads. The good indoors; We thought only 3 bathrooms would present issues but found that the layout eased the issues with each sleeping area reasonably serviced. Comfortable lounge with plenty of space to spread out. Overall very clean and comfortable.

Service rating : Arranging the booking couldn't have been easier with helpful and friendly staff
Product : An excellent, well equipped and comfortable cottage well able to cope with a large family group. We were blessed with warm and sunny weather so didn't need the heating or log burner but it was comforting to know they were there. Adequate number of bathrooms although it would have been even better if there was a working shower in the barn bathroom. The cottage latch doors proved tricky to open against the spring of the powerful self closers and maybe could be adjusted. Anyone over 5'9" will and up bumping their head several times on the front door lintel as we did, even though we were warned that it is a low door! Midges were out in force from late afternoon.

The cottage is well placed for a large range of places and activities. We would happily return here.for another holiday

Thank you for your lovely feedback on Pen-yr-Heol. We're glad you had an enjoyable stay, those pesky low doors are a down side to some of these older properties and can certainly take some getting used to, but are part of the charm. The weather sounded like it was on your side, it helps to have some sun to be able to fully experience the National Park.

      Kind regards

Service rating : Nice easy-to-use service.
Product : The cottage is large with a good combination of double and single rooms. It is well equipped and the large living room with 6 sofas was a great place for the group to socialise in. With 9 adults and 5 kids we needed something with several double and twin rooms and this fit the bill perfectly. The garden is very large (we played rounders) and has a small shallow stream running along-side it. Great for kids to explore safely. The cottage is 1-2 miles from the nearest village, at the end of a long single track road so it's nicely remote with direct access to the hills if you like walking.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay at Pen-yr-Heol. It sounds like you had a wonderful family break.

      Kind regards
