The hamlet of Ystradfellte in the Mellte valley on the South side of The Brecon Beacons, the village has a small post office and a very busy local pub The New Inn (phone and always book for a meal). The Mellte is the best known of the fascinating waterfalls on the River Neath and its finest sequence of caves and waterfalls start at Porth-yr-Ogof, approx. three quarters of a mile below the village. Beautiful woodlands surround these very picturesque and in places dramatic gorges of this and the neighbouring rivers. There are paths down the River Mellte and into the Hepste valley, where walkers can cross the Hepste River on the ledge behind the lovely water curtain called Sgwd-yr-Eira, "fall of snow". In the olden days cattle, sheep and ponies used to be driven along the ledge by local farmers. The ancient village church was restored in 1870 and its Yew trees claim to be 800 years old. Bird watching features Red Kites, Dippers in the Mellte, Woodpeckers, Tree Creepers and Nut Hatchers. Make sure you drive along the Sarn Helen Valley and see the ancient standing stone before driving down the very steep hill into the Heol Senni Valley so loved by mountain bikers and road cyclists alike!
