The Old House is a self-catering holiday house, the wing of Llwyn Madoc Manor House, it is approached along a private drive into the estate - when we visited there were banks of daffodils and then suddenly as you turn a corner you catch sight of this beautiful Manor House Llwyn Madoc. The house has been lived in by the same family for over 400 years. Really is a great place to stay with  family and friends who want to be able to enjoy a self catering house.  

 

The original farmhouse dates from the late 1600's and the main house from 1747 and then over the centuries more being added on until now a beautiful manor house with lovely mature gardens, lawns and a walled vegetable garden. With over 2000 acres of parkland with ancient trees, woodlands, hills and deep rocky sided valleys, truly an idyllic place to stay for lovers of the countryside; an absolute paradise for ornithologists .

 

The views from The Old House are panoramic and glorious - looking down over the walled gardens, the water meadows and the beautiful stocked lake with the forest beyond. The wild River Irfon flows through the valley - with several pools for Wild Swimming and of course miles of uninterrupted walking from the door.

 

The small hamlet of Beulah is only a mile from this very remote wing of the Manor House -  there is a pub serving local food The Trout Inn and a garage, post office and village store - that seems to sell everything.

 

There is the Lake with a boat (used at your own risk) for trout fishing along with the the Tennis Court are a massive added bonus to able to use when staying on this fine country estate.

So do not forget your racquets and balls or your fishing rods. 

 

Accommodation

Sleeps 7 - 4 bedrooms, 3 toilets, 2 bathrooms

 

The house is entered on the ground floor with the 3 bedrooms: 

 

Bedroom 1:  The master bedroom has a double bed

Bedroom 2:Twin beds 

Bedroom 3:  Twin beds 

Family bathroom with a bath with a shower over, hand basin and toilet

Separate toilet

A washing machine and tumble dryer and room for boots and coats.

The whole house is centrally heated with a wood boiler supplimented by oil. All the wood is from the estate.

 

Upstairs to: 

 

A spacious and pleasant kitchen and dining room, a good place for everyone to be able to sit and chat whilst preparing a meal; a window seat again making the most of the picture postcard gardens.  The kitchen is new with an electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and a freezer.  There is a traditional Welsh dresser and long dining table. 

 

With a pleasant and spacious sitting room with plenty of comfy sofas and chairs (For winter bookings there will be a new and efficient wood burning stove due to be installed Autumn 2018).There will always a great supply of dry home grown logs from the Estate.

 

The house has some interesting prints and paintings, this room has large windows with views over the garden, the lake and down the wild valley to the forest byond.

 

 

A second bathroom with a bath, hand held shower, hand basin and toilet. 

 

Bedroom 4:  A single bed.  

 

On the drive up to the house a couple of hundred yards out of Beulah, we paused as we drove past one of the prettiest churches I have ever seen in Wales. The church is called Eglwys Oen Duw, built in Victorian times as an estate church in an elaborate Gothic style, unusual for rural Wales. This little church is a shining jewel in this stunning countryside.

 

There are numerous scenic drives - following Drovers Roads and The Monks Route. One of my very favourite is along the Irfon Valley and then over to the magnificent Abergwesyn Valley- with the wild and rocky river running along the valley bottom - there are several perfect places here for wild swimming Wolf's Leap being one. This exciting drive leads then on to Devil's Staircase, over to Tregaron and on down to the West Coast of Wales.

 

The Elan Valley again is within easy reach with miles of interesting drives exploring these great lakes.  

 

This is the true wilderness of Wales - The Cambrian Hills - you could probably walk all day and hardly see a soul except the occasional farmer.  Again there are numerous cycle trails for keen mountain bikers.

 

Nearby Llanwrtyd Wells is an interesting "smallest town in the UK"  with numerous Green Events. This is the home of The Bog Snorkelling Championships (i-dents on the TV) and The Man versus Horse Race.
