This beautifully renovated spacious self catering barn to sleep 10 guests is set in a spectacular location on the banks of the river Towy. Close to the pretty village of Rhandirmwyn in the Upper Towy Valley. The steeply wooded valleys, waterfalls and rivers of this area are stunning and known to the locals as 'little Switzerland.' The Upper Towy Valley is a gateway to the Cambrian Mountains which is a vast unspoilt rugged landscape that stretches down the spine of Wales. 

It's incredible that an area of such natural outstanding beauty has no national recognition; but perhaps this has been its saviour.  Visitors to Penrhyn can meander along serene, tranquil valleys and not meet a soul, or trek across open hill and moorland and find utter solitude. This amazing scenery can be explored from the doorstep. Near by is The Crystal Mountain where in ancient times Gold, Silver and Iron used to be mined; now adays the hillside is littered with quartz which catches the sunlight and sparkles. To the side of the property the river cuts it's way through the gorge - fascinating rock formations cut away by the river over the years - spot the al fresco bath tub in the rocks where visitors enjoy wild swimming!

A stargazers paradise with NO light pollution - so bring your telescopes.

Accommodation

Sleeps 10, 5 bedrooms. Penrhyn barn offers spacious accommodation for up to 10 people.  The open plan lounge has floor to ceiling windows with amazing views of the valley. Comfy sofas, ancient oak beams, oak flooring and a woodburning stove set in a stone fireplace give the barn a warm cosy atmosphere. Sky freeview TV, DVD, Video and a CD player are provided for your entertainment.  A selection of children's videos and family games are stored in a cupboard under the stairs.  A large pine farmhouse table with matching chairs is perfect for dining with friends and family and the range in the kitchen with a six ring gas hob and double electric oven makes cooking easy. The well equipped oak fitted kitchen houses a microwave, double sink, fridge and dishwasher. 

Also on the ground floor is

Bedroom 1: with a super king-size bed which can be converted, if preferred, to either twin beds or a single bed with wheelchair disabled access. A wet room with shower, toilet and handbasin adjoins the bedroom and is also suitable for disabled. 

A separate utility room with a sink, large fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer adjoins the barn. It has a radiator and is ideal as a drying room for wet coats, boots, muddy dogs, fishing rods etc.

All the bedrooms have stunning views of the valley with Crystal Mountain and the Cambrians to the north and the rapids and pools of the river to the south. A shower room with a double shower wash handbasin and toilet is situated next to the twin room and opposite is a large family bathroom with a jacuzzi bath with shower over, handbasin and toilet. The bath has fabulous views over the valley and mountains and is perfect to relax with a glass of wine after a strenuous day walking or cycling! 

All the beds have deep luxurious mattresses and cotton bed linen and towels are provided. The ground floor is heated by oil under floor heating and upstairs by radiators; all the heating is thermostatically controlled for your comfort.

Patio doors from the lounge open onto a large south facing patio with a charcoal BBQ and garden furniture. The patio has a ramp for wheelchairs and a portable telescopic ramp provides entry into the barn. To the rear there is a lawn with a badminton net and access to the utility room and stables with safe storage for fishing equipment, bikes and canoes.  There is ample parking in the farmyard which has direct access through the front door into the lounge.

  •  Penrhyn is a 50 acre smallholding and some of the meadows can be used for walking and playing and lovely river walks, with a deep gorge and pebbled beaches to explore. 

    Rhandirmwyn

    Rhandirmwyn is steeped in history and in the 1800 and early 1900's once supported a thriving lead and zinc mining industry. The mines closed in 1932 and the remains can still be seen today. Indeed Rhandir-mwyn in Welsh means land of minerals and even gold can be found, just follow the valley road round the mallaen to the Dolaucothi Gold Mines which are owned by the National Trust.

    Twm Sion Cati, (1530-1609) was a real life Robin Hood who was a master of disguise and trickery and robbed from the rich to give to the poor. He took refuge in the valley and hid from his persecutors in a cave over looking the Towy at what is now the RSPB reserve at Dinas. 

     

  • Fishing

  • Visitors to Penrhyn can enjoy over 1/2 mile of private Salmon and Trout fishing available during the fishing season only  on the Towy (and all must produce an up to date fishing licence).The owners also have details of another private stretch of fishing upstream for which day permits can be purchased. The river flows through the farm with a spectacular gorge and a twenty foot pool, it is perfect for canoeists, and the very brave hearted who want to swim but please note the temperature of the water is freezing; it comes straight from the mountains and Llanbrianne reservoir.
    The farm is reached down a track approximately 1 mile long and the barn is across the court yard from the owner's farmhouse and is completely separate and private.   There are miles of forestry tracks and quiet country lanes for cyclists and at Cwm Rhaeader, just up the farm drive, there is a mountain bike trail that has been described by visitors, as short, but very fast and technical.  There are many mountain bike trails and cycling centers within close proximinity including Crychan Forest, Brechfa, Brecon Beacons and Coed Trallwm.

    Rhandirmwyn has a village shop and a country pub that serves good food and a fine selection of real ales.

    Cilycwm village is only 3 miles in the opposite direction and also has a lovely country pub that serves delicious home cooked food. Llandovery is 7 miles with a Heart of Wales Railway station, garage, supermarket, post office, banks, shops Farmers Market, Chinese and Indian takeaway, and many pubs.
