Property code: BN163

A literary adventure for two on the edge of the book town of Hay-on-Wye. Cosy up in this contemporary-meets-classic cottage, before heading out to bookshops, cafes, and events in the picturesque Wye Valley.

Just north of Hay-on-Wye, this bolthole on a small holding, provides the perfect base for an escape to the Welsh countryside. Great for a romantic retreat, enjoy time wandering the banks of the River Wye, roaming the bustling streets of Hay-on-Wye or summiting peaks in the magnificent Brecon Beacons National Park. After exploring, spend time on the balcony and relax in style.

Climb a flight of external steps to reach this charming first-floor apartment. Find yourself in the heart of the home: the open-plan living space. Here, the kitchen, lounge and diner fit together perfectly and sit beneath exposed beams which complement the light, contemporary, country-style interior. Switch the TV on and put your feet up on the sofa before you head to the kitchen area to rustle up something delicious. If the weather allows, dine alfresco on the pretty balcony which overlooks the owner’s farmland and rare-breed animals. Freshen up in the large shower before heading to bed in the light super-king-size bedroom, separated from the living space by a curtain and boasting views across the winding River Wye.

Outside the property, revel in the country air. The balcony faces the fields of this active smallholding and has outdoor furniture so you can enjoy an al fresco drink as the sun sets.

For a day out close to home, simply wander into the centre of Hay-on-Wye (less than a mile) and browse the bookshops and antique stores, and tuck into a tasty bite at a cafe or restaurant. 1.5 miles from home sits a shingle beach at The Warren, on the River Wye; take a picnic here or stop off in a canoe which you can hire from nearby Glasbury (5 miles). Climb Hay Bluff, a hill at the northern tip of the Black Mountains for beautiful views which reward you after an exerting climb, or venture further into the National Park and summit Pen-y-Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, which stands tall 25 miles from your door.

  • 1 super-king-size bed
  • 1 shower room with double-sized electric shower
  • Electric oven and induction hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge with a small freezer box, washer / dryer
  • TV with Freeview and DVD
  • Wi-Fi included
  • Mobile reception variable
  • Thermostat-controlled electric heaters
  • Patio with garden furniture and BBQ
  • Ample parking beside the property
  • Regret no pets
  • Small holding with free range chickens and ducks resident in the grounds
  • Seasonal Organic vegetable box available to purchase and can be pre-ordered from the owner
  • Shops, pubs, and restaurants — Hay-on-Wye, less than 1 mile, a 7 minute walk

Had a lovely relaxing week. The granary apartment was ideal and beautifully furnished. Comfortable bed, nice large shower. The Brecon Beacons is a vast, mountainous and rural region of Wales. Stretching 42 miles from east to west and covering an area of 520 square miles, the Brecon Beacons is dominated by the National Park of the same name. Split into three main areas, the Black Mountain in the west, the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr in the middle, and the Black Mountains in the east; each is a wild, bold and inspiring place to visit on holiday. The Fforest Fawr is a UNESCO Global Geopark because of its important geology and a need to conserve and protect the area from negative over development.

Stay at a self-catering cottage in the mountains and cascading woodlands or out on the moors; you can also stay in one of the Brecon Beacon’s lovely towns like Hay-on-Wye, Crickhowell, Llangorse or Brecon. Outdoor lovers will enjoy a choice of easy to challenging treks up and around Sugar Loaf Mountain, Carn Pica, Craig Cerrig-Gleisiad, Pen y Fan, or Hatterall Ridge (and many more besides). Take in uniquely Welsh attractions like Dan-yr-Ogof (the National Showcaves Centre for Wales), The Big Pit Mining Museum, Llanthony Priory, Carreg Cennen Castle, Fourteen Locks, and the Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway. Wildlife abounds in the Brecon Beacons, and it’s a great place to spot red kites and discover the successful story of their reintroduction to the UK’s skies at the Red Kite Centre. There’s so much to do for outdoor lovers and extreme sports fans here, so why not book your self-catering holiday in the Brecon Beacons today?

Our holiday cottages across the Brecon Beacons have been carefully selected. From dog-friendly cottages in the countryside to large farmhouses on the mountainsides and everything in between, we have a holiday in the Brecon Beacons to suit you.
