MWCO and Sinfonia Cymru Mid Wales Chamber Music Tour

Catrin Slater, General Manager of the fantastic Mid Wales Chamber Orchestra is our guest blogger today. She brings news of their music tour which is coming to some great venues  in the area.

Our mid Wales chamber music tour is less than three weeks away (18 - 21 April), the rehearsal schedule is fixed, the transport and accommodation is fixed and the music has all been sent out for the musicians to prepare. Led by MWCO musicians violinist Marcia Crayford (ex leader Nash Ensemble) and Moray Welsh (ex-principal cello LSO) the tour brings two of the UK’s foremost chamber musicians together with four outstanding young artists who are in the early stages of their careers. It’s a combination that everyone loves – musicians and audiences – and we at MWCO are thrilled to be collaborating again with Sinfonia Cymru, the chamber orchestra dedicated to nurturing the next generation of professional musicians.

The musicians will perform Brahms’ String Sextet in B flat major and Spohr’s String Sextet in C major, and Marcia Crayford and Moray Welsh will also perform the virtuosic Handel/Halvorsen Passacaglia for violin and cello.

Marcia Crayford, joint artistic director of MWCO, left London to live in the Brecon Beacons and set up Mid Wales Chamber Orchestra with conductor James Slater just three years ago. She hasn’t looked back: “living and performing here means being part of a deeply fulfilling community of committed players and generous audiences and you just can’t beat the very special atmosphere of performing among friends amidst the stunning countryside of mid Wales”.

We’re very grateful to the Arts Council of Wales for supporting this year’s tour, which will start on Thursday 18 April at St Michael’s Church Cwmdu, near Crickhowell.  We’re then off to Theatr Mwldan in Cardigan on the 19th, the wonderful Barn at the Willow Globe just south of Rhayader on Saturday 20th and finally the beautiful church of St Michael’s Discoed near Presteigne on Sunday 21st.
