History

Llanwrtyd Wells is situated amidst an ancient volcanic area and in 1732 the local vicar made a discovery that would change the little town for years to come. Suffering as he did from scurvy, the poor vicar was taken aback when he looked into the foul-smelling well near his church and noticed an incredibly healthy-looking frog swimming in the sulphur water. Upon seeing this, it is said that the vicar decided to try ‘taking the waters’ for himself and within no time had cured his scurvy and brought fame to the sulphur spring waters of the town.
