As you may expect from a border town, Hay-on-Wye has been at the heart of many battles over the ages.

Visit the site of the original motte and bailey castle adjacent to St. Mary’s Church and admire the present stone castle, built in the early 1100’s by the infamously treacherous William de Breos II, the Norman Marcher Lord responsible for the Abergavenny Massacre.
