Symonds Yat
Symonds Yat, in the Royal Forest of Dean, lies on the eastern side of the River Wye, only a few minutes walk from the magnificent viewpoint of Yat Rock. This is a heavily wooded limestone outcrop 500 feet high. From its summit the River Wye can be seen in almost every direction as it twists and winds through the deeply wooded gorge into a large horse-shoe bend. Peregrine Falcons have been nesting here and in the summer months you have the rare opportunity to watch from the RSPB viewing station, this most spectacular bird whose diving speed can reach an astonishing 125 miles per hour. The banks of Symonds Yat East and West are linked by an unusual man-powered rope ferry accross the river. As well as pubs, restaurants and small shops, there are a range of visitor attractions, including The Wye Valley Heritage Centre, The Museum of Mazes, and the Forestry Commission Sculpture Trail. Canoe hire is available, and the river has areas of rapids and white water for the experienced canoeists. The area has become very popular with rock climbing enthusiasts.
