Llandeilo
On the western side of the Brecon Beacons lies the old market town of LLANDEILO. Llandeilo's narrow streets make this an attractive and historic town. There is a lovely old bridge over River Towy (largest single span stone bridge in Wales). The town has an excellent selection of shops, including an antiques centre, art gallery, cookery shop and boutiques. Just a few miles from Llandeilo stands the unique fortification of Carreg Cennen Castle. Y Garn Goch is the largest iron age fort in Wales and stands proudly above Bethlehem just 5 miles from Llandeilo. National Trust properties Dinefwr Park and the Dolaucothi Gold Mines at Pumpsaint are also closeby. The National Botanic Garden of Wales is definitely worth a visit along with the recently discovered Aberglasney Medieval House and Gardens as featured on TV. This whole area is now designated a new GEO PARK - a World Heritage Site.
Red kite country is to the north where visitors can visit the RSPB Dinas Bird Reserve, follow a nature trail past Twm Sion Catti's Cave, the famous Welsh Robin Hood, and drive through "Little Switzerland" en route for the village of Rhandirmwyn and Llyn Brianne Reservoir with its most dramatic 300 ft dam. Excellent fishing is available on the River Towy, its tributaries and the Usk Reservoir. There are Golf Courses, pony trekking centres and riding, cycle hire and swimming pools in the area. The Heart of Wales Railway Line is one of Britain's most scenic lines leading from Shrewsbury to Swansea with many halts en route for the walker and cyclist; especially magnificent is the 18 arch stone viaduct near Cynghordy. The traditional market town of Carmarthen is about half an hour away, the Gower peninsular with its wonderful beaches, the beautiful and sometimes wild coastal areas of Pembroke and Cardiganshire are about 1 hour's drive. Brecon is 24 miles.
