Erwood
| "A comparatively unknown area, but one which is noted for its beauty and tranquillity" |
| The Upper Wye Valley is the perfect location for those wanting a very quiet undisturbed holiday. The River Wye, famous for its excellent salmon and trout fishing (licences and permits must be obtained) and in season popular with canoeists shooting the rapids, runs through the villages of Glasbury, Llyswen and Erwood. Glasbury has a village shop/ post office, pub and garage; a Canoe centre and an outdoor pursuits centre. The river is wide at this point with a long grassy bank, perfect for picnics, swimming and boating. "The town of books" Hay-on-Wye is only 4 miles away; It is 12½ miles to Brecon and 28 miles to Hereford and the nearest railway station.
Llyswen often wins the best kept village of the year for its mass of hanging baskets, tubs and well tended flower beds adorning the village shop, garage and houses. For the keen fisherman, on the outskirts of the village is the Dderw Farm, which has carp ponds. The Griffin Inn serves good food and is Egon Ronay listed and nearby is the famous Llangoed Hall Hotel owned by Sir Bernard Ashley. Llyswen is approximately 12 miles from Brecon and 15 miles from Builth Wells. Further up the Wye Valley is the beautiful area around Erwood, a small village with a shop and a good inn. There are some lovely walks in this area; the way marked Wye Valley Walk runs through the village, with spectacular views over the Wye Valley and onto open hillside and with the possibility of seeing a variety of wildlife and birds including the RED KITE often sighted in this area. Erwood is 18 miles from Brecon and 10 miles from Builth Wells. Along the B4567 a quiet and attractive route, which runs between Erwood and Builth Wells, is the charming village of Aberedw, with its old church and renown for being near the cave where Prince Llywelyn went into hiding from his enemies. |
