Cwmdu
CWMDU village nestles between the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons and despite the fact that the name means the Black Valley it is far from gloomy; rather it is one of the most sheltered and picturesque valleys in Brecknock. From the village there is quick access to the many footpaths which lead up onto the hills, a scenic mountain route leads you to Llangorse Lake, for other activities such as riding centres and hang gliding centres. Cwmdu has a friendly pub, the Farmer's Arms, which provides good and generous food and Crickhowell is only 4 miles. The neighbouring village of
TRETOWER boasts a Norman tower, the remains of a motte and bailey castle; and next to this a unique and fascinating Medieval Manor House with fortifications and reconstructed medieval garden. Summer open air theatre performances can be enjoyed in the delightful courtyard. This is a popular film location - the most recent film was Libertine with Jonny Depp, Restoration with Meg Ryan, and an adaptation of H.E. Bates' Feast of July. An audio-guide can be hired at the House, which takes you through the history of the Castle and House; pointing out details and providing information which otherwise may be missed. Crickhowell 3 miles; Abergavenny 12 miles and Brecon 11 miles .
