The hamlet of Ystradfellte in the Mellte valley on the South side of Fforest Fawr has a small post office and a pub (weekend only - check opening hours). The Mellte is the best known of the fascinating head-streams of the River Neath and its finest sequence of caves and waterfalls start at Porth-yr-Ogof, approx. three quarters of a mile below the village. Beautiful limestone woodlands clothe the gorges of this and the neighbouring rivers. There are paths down the Mellte and into the Hepste valley. There, walkers can cross the Hepste River on the ledge behind the lovely water curtain called Sgwd-yr-Eira, "fall of snow", or by its older name, Cilhepste Fall. Cattle, sheep and ponies used to be driven along the ledge by local farmers. The ancient village church was restored in 1870 and its Yew trees claim to be 800 years old. Bird watching features Red Kites, Dippers in the Mellte, Woodpeckers, Tree Creepers and Nut Hatchers.
